We are delighted to welcome you to London for the ESSKA Foot and Ankle Section Focus Meeting 2027, dedicated to From Mechanism to Match Fitness: Managing Syndesmosis Injuries in Athletes.
This meeting will bring together colleagues with a shared interest in the care of athletes with syndesmosis injuries. The programme follows the clinical pathway from understanding the mechanism of injury and assessing ankle stability to choosing treatment and planning a return to sport.
We will begin with anatomy, biomechanics and the diagnostic pathway, before exploring the initial clinical assessment, classification and treatment decision-making. The programme will address non-surgical management and the rationale for surgery, including the IFASC consensus on HAS in elite athletes. Afternoon sessions will focus on stabilisation options, chronic syndesmosis injuries, postoperative care and return to sport.
Discussion is central to the day. Alongside the lectures, a round-table session on real-life cases and difficult decisions will provide an opportunity to examine how different approaches apply in practice. A sponsored re-live surgery session will offer a further setting for discussion with the faculty. We encourage you to bring your questions and share your own clinical experience.
We hope the meeting will help you reflect on the decisions you face in practice and exchange ideas with colleagues working across the athlete’s recovery pathway. There will also be time to reconnect and make new contacts during the breaks.

The meeting
Anatomy, biomechanics and the pathomechanics of injury, the stability of the ankle mortise and the diagnostic pathway, then the initial examination, the IFASC consensus and non-surgical care.
Stabilisation options, the chronic syndesmosis in the athlete, postoperative treatment and the road back to sport.
Real-life cases and tough decisions around the table, followed by a sponsored re-live surgery session with the faculty.
Venue
The meeting takes place at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace, the British Academy’s home on The Mall, a few minutes’ walk from Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.

ESSKA Foot and Ankle Focus Meeting
10–11 Carlton House Terrace, the British Academy, in the heart of Westminster.
The venue
The meeting takes place in the Beatrice Webb Room and Gallery at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace, home of the British Academy, overlooking The Mall. The Beatrice Webb Room is the largest room in the building, with brass chandeliers, period detail and tall sash windows; the adjoining Gallery shows works from the British Academy’s collection. Registration and refreshments are in the Number 11 Lobby.

Getting to the venue
The Piccadilly line runs direct from every Heathrow terminal to Piccadilly Circus, a short walk from the venue down Lower Regent Street.
Take the Gatwick Express or a Southern train to London Victoria, then the Victoria line to Green Park and the Piccadilly line one stop to Piccadilly Circus.
The Piccadilly line runs direct from King’s Cross St Pancras to Piccadilly Circus. Eurostar arrives at St Pancras from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.
Piccadilly Circus (Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines) and Charing Cross (Northern and Bakerloo lines, and National Rail) are the closest stations. Contactless cards work on every line.
